In March, we reached a defining milestone in our journey. We moved the Virtual Guide Dog out of the lab and into its first professional, live environment at Aico headquarters.
Why Aico?
For our first major real-world trial, we needed a space that mirrored the challenges of modern infrastructure and Aico’s facility provided the perfect landscape.
The goal of this internal testing phase was to stress-test our "digital safety net." We wanted to ensure that the precision of our spatial audio paths remained rock-solid when moved from a controlled simulation into a real-world environment.
The Support of Sight Loss Shropshire
While our team conducted the technical testing, the logistical success of this session was made possible through our new friends at Sight Loss Shropshire.
Their support, along with Aico was instrumental in helping us frame the trial within the context of real-world accessibility needs. By collaborating with organizations that understand the daily hurdles of the sight loss community, we ensure that every technical adjustment we make is grounded in the goal of true, autonomous mobility.
What We Learned
Moving through the Aico facility allowed our team to observe the technology’s behavior in real-time. We focused on:
Acoustic Consistency: Ensuring the spatial audio "nodes" remained clear and intuitive.
Vertical Navigation: Testing the transition between rooms the audio cues updated seamlessly as we moved through the environment.
Confidence at Scale: Validating that our mapping process could be deployed quickly and accurately in an untested venue.
The Result: Lab Tested, Real-World Approved
The March trials served as a "proof of concept" that exceeded our expectations. The data gathered during these sessions confirmed that our technology provides the level of precision and spatial awareness needed for a user to navigate an unfamiliar building with total confidence.
This wasn't just a successful test; it was the validation we needed to move forward. It proved that the Virtual Guide Dog isn't just a concept, it is a working solution ready to transform how we think about inclusive spaces.
What’s Next?
Following this success, we want to take the the Virtual Guide Dog on the road, showcasing our progress at major industry events and connecting with venue managers who share our vision for a more accessible future.
We would like to extend our thanks to the team at Aico for their hospitality and to Sight Loss Shropshire for their continued support.
Independence has a new sound. We’re just getting started.
